I think your right David , but also I believe its really about context and the requirements of the meeting. Video conferencing systems have moved on a great deal, as well as many other systems and toolkits.

Id like to throw something in here, and that is connectivity of human interaction that creates things like "trust" "honesty" "expression"

In a way one does not replace the other. Its useful to have a conversation over skype because it satisfies a need and the context.

i think we need to have that conversation on where these technologies are best applied rather than a generic solution.

Maybe the point that Ken Rigby makes about the utility of conferences shows that we may be talking about quite different models and purposes. The conferences that I occasionally attend are to meet and exchange or contest ideas or findings of research and practice in design. I'm not sure that I have ever attended such an event where the primary purpose was to "advertise products" and I will be interested to hear what such events exist. I have no doubt that some events exist to make money for their organisers, though in my personal experience of organising large conferences profit has not been the motivator, rather quality of exposition.

At the moment there remains a need to travel to conferences. While they are useful, the level of interaction in text based chat rooms is of a very low order, and massively stretched over time, compared with f2f meetings. However, the technology improves all the time, and I find myself quite often having small interactions with a few people online through Skype and iChat. No doubt these tools will improve as the need for, and ethics of, travel declines in the future. This conference is of course an attempt to produce a model of online interaction beyond the 'flesh' meetings, and its success in so doing will no doubt be analysed after the event. I applaud the organisers in experimenting in this way, and adding to our knowledge.

We are not going back; "he who resists change will be the architects of decay." Everything will be done online; no need to travel all these conference and seminars things are just for social meet ups -- a total waste of time and money. I have stopped going they serve no purpose in advertising products they only thing they do is bring income to the providers.

New designs will be created in 3D and reviewed in tele-immersive environments see http://furnace.projectchainsaw.com for an example engineering furnace design. Note the CAD drawings and construction photos on the wall.
